The term in the backup industry is "bare metal restore". If you have to manually note/backup and be aware it's not just a one-click backup/ restore Note BackBlaze has got me out of some tricky situations with amazing ease to zoom into a file I need to restore, but I can't rely on it if my system goes down. However, I am a customer and I've had to resort to other backup solutions as well as BackBlaze to make sure I am safe personally. If you have to manually note/backup and be aware it's not just a one-click backup/ restore and that you WILL lose information if you have to restore from Backblaze, it's not a true one-click solution. Other users comment on losing app plugins etc.a true one click solution. I've lost apps and settings embedded into the app collected over the years. Other users comment on loosing app plugins etc. Whilst I love Backblaze, it's not a full restore option. If you had Microsoft Excel installed, go get it from Microsoft's website again, etc. For example, if you had Steam installed before, go get it and install it again. Install your applications from where-ever you got them originally. These would have rotated out and been deleted automatically by your system after a few days anyway, they aren't long term personal data you want to retain like photos and music are. Backblaze also excludes certain log files that change all the time and won't be related to your newly rebuilt computer in any way, shape, or fashion any way. Those cookies mean nothing after 30 minutes, so backing them up just wastes your bandwidth and Backblaze's storage space. For instance, internet cookies that expire in 30 minutes. Backblaze only excludes three things as a philosophy:Ī) The computer's core OS that allows it to boot up.ī) The Applications you can reinstall from where you got them.Ĭ) Temporary files that don't make any sense to backup. When you are done with steps #1 - #4 there shouldn't be ANYTHING AT ALL MISSING. If you aren't comfortable knowing where to put things, find somebody locally who is comfortable to help you. Now you can copy those folders onto your new computer or newly rebuilt computer. If you had Microsoft Excel installed, go get it from Microsoft's website again, etc.Ĥ) When the USB restore hard drive shows up, connect it to your computer. When you are finished with this step, it would have been USELESS for Backblaze to backup the Operating System, right?ģ) Install your applications from where-ever you got them originally. Maybe take it to the Apple geniuses, maybe reinstall the OS from scratch yourself, but get it to boot up. You cannot restore using Backblaze until your computer boots. Ģ) Get your existing computer to boot up. You need to get the Operating System from the manufacturer (Apple), you really do, backups won't help you recover an Operating System. Even if Backblaze had backed up your operating system, the M1 ARM based Macintosh CANNOT RUN IT. This means it would have been USELESS for Backblaze to backup the Operating System, right? And here is the most obvious fact to drive this point home: the new computer will be an M1 ARM based Macintosh, and your old system was an Intel based Macintosh. It will come with a working Operating System that boots already. For example, if you had 30 day version history and need a previous version of the file from 20 days ago, if you procrastinate 11 days the data becomes unrecoverable, make sense? So go do this!!Ģ) Purchase a new computer from Apple if your computer is no longer physically there at all (like if it was stolen). The reason we want you to do this quickly is there are several "timers" that just started, and if there are any issues we can fix them, but only if we have time. This can be done even if your laptop isn't working, use the web browser on your phone to order it if you have to, but get this step done RIGHT AWAY. This is free if you return the hard drive to Backblaze later. Do not skip this step, and don't procrastinate. What this means is that to restore a system that was stolen or crashed completely the procedure goes like this:ġ) This is very important - go and order a USB hard drive restore from the Backblaze website with all of your data to be shipped to your home. I’m just wondering, for anyone whose had to restore a hard drive with a Backblaze backup, what did it not restore?Īt a high level: your bootable operating system and application executables were not backed up. Disclaimer: I work at Backblaze and wrote a lot of the Exclusions code.
